Shakuntala Devi (1929–2013) was an Indian mathematician and astrologer. She known as the “human computer” for her ability to make calculations faster than any other human.
Born in Bangalore, India, Shakuntala Devi was a child prodigy. At the age of three, she could solve complex math problems and by the age of five, she had mastered the multiplication table. At the age of six, she given a scholarship to study mathematics at the University of Mysore.
In 1977, Shakuntala Devi was invited to the Imperial College of London to solve a complex math problem in only twenty–eight seconds. The first woman featured in the Guinness Book of World Records for her calculations.
In addition to her work in mathematics, Shakuntala Devi was also an astrologer. She wrote books about horoscopes and astrology and even wrote an autobiography, The World of Homosexuals.
Throughout her life, Shakuntala Devi worked tirelessly to promote the importance of mathematics. She travelled around India giving lectures and speeches to encourage young people to pursue mathematics and science. She also wrote a number of books on mathematics and astrology.
