Halmos was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1916. He received his bachelor‘s degree from the University of Illinois in 1935 and his doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1938. After teaching at the University of Michigan and the University of Illinois. Halmos joined the faculty at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey in 1946.
In addition to his groundbreaking work in mathematics, Halmos was also a prolific writer and educator. He wrote numerous books, including Finite–Dimensional Vector Spaces. which is considered one of the most important texts in linear algebra.
