Pythagoras, born c. 570 BCE, Samos, Ionia Greece and died c. 500–490 BCE, Metapontum, Lucanium Italy. His father, Mnesarchus was a precious stones engraver. He is one of the most famous and controversial ancient Greek philosophers. His political and religious teachings well known in Magna Graecia and influenced the philosophies of Plato, Aristotle. The influence of Pythagoras in mathematics and philosophy remains strong today, as do the mysteries surrounding the great Greek philosopher.
He is best known in the modern day for the Pythagorean Theorem, a mathematical formula that states that the square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides. This formula applied to measuring distance and space as, for example, in planning and executing the construction of a building.
