William Paul Thurston Born on 30 October 1946, in Washington, D.C., United States. And Died on 21 August 2012, in Rochester, New York, United States. William Thurston was born in Washington, D.C. to Margaret Thurston, a seamstress, and Paul Thurston, an aeronautical engineer.
William Paul Thurston an American mathematician and a pioneer in the field of low–dimensional topology. He is best for his work on the Geometrization Conjecture, which he proved in 1982. Thurston was born in Washington, D.C. on October 30, 1946, and grew up in Virginia. He studied mathematics at New College (now part of the University of South Florida) and went on to earn his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley in 1972. After spending time at MIT, Princeton, and the University of California, Davis, he joined the faculty at Princeton in 1976. Throughout his career,
Thurston made major contributions to the study of 3–manifolds, hyperbolic geometry, and geometric topology. He awarded the Fields Medal in 1982 for his work on the Geometrization Conjecture and was a recipient of the National Medal of Science in 1988. Thurston died on August 21, 2012, at the age of 65. He is remembered for his remarkable contributions to mathematics, and his lasting impact on the field of low–dimensional topology.
