Peter Hilton was born on 8 August 1923 in Manchester, England. He died on 6 November 2010 in Cambridge, England. Peter Hilton’s father was Conrad Hilton and his mother was Mary Adelaide Barron.
Hilton was a professor at the University of Manchester from 1956 to 1964, and then at the University of Warwick until his retirement in 1988. He was also a visiting professor at Harvard and Cornell and lectured at universities around the world.
Hilton was best known for his work in algebraic topology, a branch of mathematics that studies properties of shapes that remain unchanged under certain transformations. He particularly known for his work on homotopy theory. which studies topological spaces that have the same shape but different sizes.
Hilton wrote several books, including Homology Theory (1965), An Introduction to Homotopy Theory (1977), and Algebraic Topology (1980). He was also the editor of several books, including a two–volume work on general topology.
Hilton was a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the London Mathematical Society.
